Search Text Boxes
The telephone directory has 7 sets of Search Criteria. This is where you can enter the information about the subscriber you are searching for. I. Search Text Boxes 1. Town 2. Name 3. Occupation 4. First Name 5. Street 6. Radius search 7. Area Code 8. Postal Code
II. Search Options 1. Simple Search 2. Advanced Search 3. Background Search
Town
Towns can be entered in combination with all search boxes. If none of the town, postal code or area code field is completed, a national search is carried out. Because you do not need to enter a name if an entry has been made in the town box, it is possible to search for subscribers in a particular street or with a particular occupation within a town.
Town entries should be as unambiguous as possible. If you do not know the exact name of the town, enter the initial letters of the town you are searching for. This hit list will then show all the towns whose names begin with the letters you have entered. Select the required town with the mouse to transfer this to the box where the town is entered.
If you enter the initial letters of the town and "*" in combination with an entry in the name box, a search is made of all the towns whose names begin with the letters entered. If you enter "Mann*" for example, subscribers in both Mannhausen and in Mannheim are searched.
Name A letter must be entered in the name box if a search is to be performed in a particular town.
At least two letters must be entered in the name box if a search is to be performed throughout the whole of Germany without a more specific town entry being made.
You must always enter a name in the name box in order to find a subscriber. It is not possible to search for first names in a town or to search for subscribers in a particular street.
Occupation
Occupations can only be searched in combination with a name and a town. The occupation does not necessarily have to be entered however and is only used to supplement the information in the Name Box.
If letters are entered, the occupation which contains this string of letters is searched.
If the letters "pr" are entered for example, the search will produce results for "Professor" and "Dental Practice".
First Name
First names can only be searched in combination with a name. The first name does not necessarily have to added however and is only used to supplement the information in the Name Box.
In Berlin there are, for example, over 10,000 subscribers with the name "Müller". A search will take a long time to complete and will produce a very large number of results.
If the initial letters are entered, a search is made for the first name beginning with these initial letters.
Street Streets can only be searched in combination with a name and a town. The street does not necessarily have to be entered however and is only used to supplement the information in the Name Box.
If the initial letters are entered, a search is made for the street beginning with these letters. If "Goethe" is entered, for example, a search is made for both Goethestrasse and Goetheplatz.
Area Code
Use the pull-down menu to select the area code (area code, fax code, mobile telephone, service number, etc.). If you select Mobile radio and Service number, a list of further selection options will appear in the search box.
Area codes can be entered in combination with all search fields. If none of the town, postal code or area code fields are completed, a national search is carried out.
Because you do not need to enter a name if an entry has been made in the area code box, it is possible to search for subscribers in a particular street or with a particular occupation within an area with a particular code.
You need to enter the initial three digits in order to carry out an area code search. If you enter "020", for example, a search is carried out in all those towns in which the area code begins with "020".
Postal Code (region)
Use the pull down menu to select the required region (postal code, federal state, regional administrative authority, district). If you select Federal state, Regional administrative authority, and District a list of further selection options will appear in the search box.
Regions can be entered in combination in all search boxes. If none of the town, region, or area code fields is completed, a national search is carried out.
Because you do not need to enter a name if an entry has been made in the area code box, it is possible to search for subscribers in a particular street or with a particular occupation within a town.
You need to enter the initial two digits of the code in order to carry out a postal code search. If you enter "65", for example, a search is carried out in all those towns in which the area code begins with "65".
You can also enter the postal code using the Postal Code Map.
Advanced Search The advanced search enables you to carry out searches according to more detailed criteria than the Simple Search.
Subentries are searched and displayed too. You might, for example, want to search the swimming pools in a particular town. These often do not
have an entry of their own and may be listed under the subscriber "Town Council". The advanced search will find the subscriber ”Town Council” for the search text ”swimming pools”.
The advanced search also searches to the right and left of your entry. If you are searching for "DeTeMedien Deutsche Telekom Medien GmbH" for example, the advanced search will find the entry you are looking for even if you only enter "Telekom".
Define additional advanced search options in Settings.
1. Search for additional entries A search for a related additional entry will also find related subscribers. The German railway company Deutsche Bahn AG is also entered under ”Train information”, for example". Searches for additional entries will find the searched subscriber if ”Train information” or simply ”Information” is added.
2. Free text search
The advanced search will also find subscriber entries made up of several words. You might, for example, wish to search for the subscriber "Fahrradzubehör Müller & Schulz" without actually knowing the name of the exact entry. Simply enter "Schulz" and "Fahrradzubehör" and the advanced search will find the subscriber as the search is performed to both the right and left of the entry.
Radius search
Die Radius search carries out a search in the vicinity of your specified Location.
If, for example, you are looking for a dentist in your immediate vicinity, enter the word dentist in the Occupation Search Text Box. You can now enter the distance from your location (e.g. "4": numbers represent kilometres. 4 means 4 kilometres; 0.7 means 700 metres; etc.). This search would find all dentists within 4 kilometres from your location.
Now start the search by clicking the enter button.
The location defined in the Settings is displayed again. You are also able to add a new location and this is then saved if you activate the box Save location for later search. The search is started by clicking on the Search button.
Background Search You can enter information in a Search Text Box at the same time that a search is being carried out. Search Assistent
